PROPOSALS have been put forward for a supported living affordable housing development in Colwyn Bay.

Wales and West Housing Association have lodged proposals with Conwy County Borough Council for land at 3-8 Bay View Road Colwyn Bay [the location is described as between the high street and shopping centre]. Plans include the demolition of existing buildings - there is currently a "small row" of three-four storey terrace housing.

A Design and Access statement into the development says a need has been identified for affordable homes for people aged 55 and over in Colwyn Bay.

The development will target those who are relatively active and independent who may wish to downsize.

It is hoped three accessible one bedroom two person apartments can be created as well as 43 one bedroom two person apartments and eight two bedroom three three person apartments.

Shared communal facilities will be built including seating areas and an external courtyard garden and electric scooter store to encourage independence and greater mobility.

The document adds: "The development consists of 54 older persons apartments built to Welsh Assembly Design Quality Requirements and Lifetime Home Standards for future adaptability. A mix of one and two bedroom apartments are provided and include three wheelchair accessible lower ground floor flats.

"The design has been developed to respond to the site levels and reflect the scale and massing of the adjoining buildings.

"Whilst contemporary in appearance, the building takes cues from the local building language replicating the rhythms of the existing street scene and using a mix of traditional and modern materials.

"Although there are five stories of development the building has been carefully designed to minimise its impact and respond to its surrounding context."
