WORK has begun building a new stand at the stadium of Colwyn Bay Football Club.

The 4 Crosses Construction Arena (Llanelian Road) will boast a 1,000-seater stand once the work is completed.

Weather permitting, it is expected to take between 16 and 18 weeks to complete the project.

In the last week, the two existing covered terraced stands on the bank side of the ground, which were constructed in the late 1980s, were dismantled.

Work on the car parking area at the rear of the ground, which will have space for up to 200 vehicles, is also underway.

For safety reasons, the club has asked fans to stay away from the section of the ground concerned on matchdays as construction work continues.

Planning permission for the new stand was granted by Conwy County Borough Council in October.

Councillors hope the addition of the new car park will also ease traffic congestion on matchdays.

Previously, Neil Coverley, club chairman, said: “This development will help promote and progress not only the local football club but the local area, nationally and internationally, helping boost the economy and employment.

“It encourages growth and progression and would be a significant addition to the community and one of which we would all benefit from.

The stadium was built in 1984 and currently can hold up to 3,000 people, with covered seating for 500 supporters.

The new stand will take the stadium's seating capacity to 1,850.

Colwyn Bay FC currently sit top of the JD Cymru North table, with 12 wins and a draw from their 13 games so far this season.

The Seagulls finished sixth in the 15-club division last term.
