IT WAS another bumper turn-out on a hot and heavy evening for nearly 200 athletes at the Llanrug 5k race last Wednesday night, which also incorporated the North Wales championships.

Following a fast and relatively flat course around the village, the event attracted a large contingent of top club and social runners, with many additionally recording personal best (PB) times despite the challenging conditions.

North Wales Road Runners Club (NWRRC) entered 17 athletes, with Martin Green leading the team back in 9th place, and he also won his MV45 age cat in 17.01.

He was followed very closely by Jonathan Kettle, who was 11th in 17.12, and he came second in the same cat as Martin.

Will Williams finished in 21st place, and he was second MV50 cat, with another positive performance in 18.06.

Stuart Culverhouse ran well in 44th place in 20.21, with Ben Hudson 51st in 20.48, and Sion Thomas finished 63rd in 21.34.

Karl Morris enjoyed a fast run in 21.56, and he was 76th, with Richard Scamans also in form, and he finished 86th in 22.40.

Sarah Ferguson Hudson won her FV40 age cat after finishing 87th overall with a good time of 22.52, and Cheryl Frost was another age cat winner after claiming first place in her FV55 cat in 23.26.

Kay Hatton continued with her excellent form in 101st place overall, and she was second in her FV60 cat in 23.56.

Cai Roberts and his partner Kelly-Marie Alford ran around the course together and Kelly finished in 106th place in 24.37, with Cai just one place and two seconds behind.

Meanwhile, Hannah Griffith finished 126th in 25.53, with Vicky Taylor 158th in 30.14, and Gwennan Charlton enjoyed her run in the sun in 163rd place in 31.21, whilst Rachel Morris came home in 165th place in 32.02.

The final results of the North Wales championships saw NWRRC collect nine medals, including two gold, four silver, and three bronze.

Llyr wins T2 Slateman Sprint Duathlon race

NWRRC member Llyr Ap Geraint-Roberts crossed the line in first place in the T2 classification of the Slateman Sprint Duathlon in the Snowdonia National Park last Saturday (June 10).

Despite an undulating course, plus very warm and breezy conditions, Llyr a top Welsh Master and GB athlete, competed well throughout the event and recorded a time of nine mins and 11 seconds for his first 2.36km run.

This was followed by a 20.36km bike ride with 368m of elevation, which he completed in 44 minutes and 53 seconds; and then he followed this again with a second 5.59k run, including 198m of elevation, in 27 mins and 48 seconds.

His total time for the entire event including transition was shown as one hour, 23 minutes and one second.

Coleshaw Hall: Three Road Runners took part in the Coleshaw Hall 10k in Cheshire on Sunday (June 11).

Will Williams ran well again and finished in 13th place overall in 37.37, and he was second in MV50 age cat.

Sion Thomas was 150th in 48.54, with Vicky Taylor 403rd in 1.06.25.

Coniston: Lesley Goodson ran in the Coniston 16k race on Saturday and said it was hot and bumpy, at the South Lakeland event, but she ran well over the 14.80k course with 384m of elevation, to finish in two hours.

Runcorn: Steve Mason finished third at the Phoenix parkrun, at Halton, near Runcorn, on Saturday, and he also won his MV45 age cat in 19.34.

Penrhyn Castle: Mandy Owen enjoyed a good run at the Penrhyn Castle parkrun and she was 123rd in 33.13.

Bryn stars at Conwy parkrun after return from the States

Conwy parkrun again attracted a good number of talented young athletes and visitors from across the UK, in addition to the usual mix of club and social runners, who all enjoyed a fast dash over this picturesque route despite very hot conditions.

The first male runner back over this bumpy and bone-dry, out-and-back course, was promising young teenage athlete Bryn Woodall, who has recently returned home from America for a break, where he is currently studying.

The talented SM18 age cat winner who represents Colwyn Bay AC, celebrated another worthy victory in just 16 minutes dead, and he was more than a minute ahead of his nearest rival, visitor Liam Busby (Wycombe Phoenix AC) who finished second in 17.06.

Gemma Moore (Eryri Harriers) was the first female finisher with a new PB of 19.23, and she also won her VW35 age cat in seventh place overall.

Hayley Turner (GOG Triathlon) was the second female athlete in 42nd place overall in 23.46, and she was second in the same age cat as Gemma.

Sian Beck (Prestatyn RC), ran well in 45th place overall, and she was the third female runner in 23.51, and also won her VW45 age cat.

There were 240 finishers.

NWRRC only entered 10 members due to other commitments but still recorded four age cat wins and one second place.

Jonathan Kettle led the team back after finishing fourth overall, and first in his MV45 age cat in 17.48.

Karl Morris enjoyed a good run in 25th place in 22.14, and young Joe Culverhouse ran his socks off in 29th place, and he was also 1st in his JM11-14 cat in 22.25, with his father Stuart, who ran with him, finishing just one place and one second behind.

Richard Scamans finished 38th overall in 23.33, and Cheryl Frost completed another excellent performance in 53rd place and first VW55 age cat in 23.33.

Master veteran Mark Mason also collected another MV70 cat win in 27.20, with veteran John O’Shea 114th in 28.57.

Meanwhile, another master vet, Don Hale, struggled with the heat following a difficult week, to finish 127th, and second MV70 cat in 30.15, and Rachel Morris was 178th in 34.33.

NWRRC chairman Kevin Slattery’s son Ian Slattery also took part in the Conwy parkrun, and he finished 9th in 19.53, with Ian’s wife and singer Monique running home in 228th place in 45.49, and his son Ruben, claiming 236th place in 50.08.
