A controversial plan to build 49 residential units on green land next to a school for children with special needs has been submitted.

The Anwyl development on Bodafon Fields off Nant y Gamar Road, Llandudno, has faced fierce opposition from local residents over what they claim will be the effect on traffic in the area.

One resident said it could become “an even bigger traffic nightmare and cause mayhem” because traffic for nearby special school Ysgol Y Gogarth already causes issues for locals.

A public meeting has been hosted by Aberconwy MS Janet Finch-Saunders and a petition has gained more than 340 signatories.

Now the plan has been submitted to Conwy county council and it shows a development where 35 per cent will be “affordable homes”, ranging from one bed apartments to five bedroom luxury dwellings.

Images within the planning documents show there will be a single access point onto the horseshoe shaped development, with trees, green space and ponds.

Although the design and access statement (DAS) claims there will be 49 dwellings the number when totalled comes to 51, including one apartment block containing four one-bed apartments.

The DAS states: “The location of the site represents an opportunity to create a well-designed high-quality residential development that responds to the local context, positively addresses the existing landscape as well as helps define the boundary between existing residential developments and the green wedge existing farmland.”

The site stands next to Ysgol y Gogarth school which will have 255 pupils from September and already produces a lot of traffic said resident Ruby Williams, who lives on Nant y Gamar Road – and also on the same road as Bodafon Farm Park.

The location has been the subject of protests against housing in the past but a public inquiry ruled it can be used for new homes and is classified as a “housing contingency site” in the current Local Development Plan (LDP).

Ms Williams said it’s “not worth wasting our breath” trying to oppose the housing scheme but claims the entrance and exit to the site would cause bigger traffic issues once it’s occupied.

She said: “The main beef is Nant y Gamar Road from the promenade – it’s a nightmare.

“Pupil numbers are up to around 250 kids (At Ysgol y Gogarth) and there are plans to expand and have more.

“It’s a wonderful school but when they rebuilt it we said they hadn’t included enough car parking.”

An application to site a temporary classroom on the school site has been logged by Conwy county council, which will allow another 12 pupils to attend from September.

Ms Williams added: “My beef is the access road to the development site. It just doesn’t make sense putting it there. It will be an even bigger nightmare and will cause mayhem.”
