A YOUNG boxer from Meliden has celebrated winning the first international championship he has taken part in.

Alfie Lewis, a 16-year-old student at Prestatyn High School, was a gold medallist at the Boxam International Tournament 2023, held in La Nucia, Spain last week.

On May 17, he won his semi-final against Spaniard Alberto Castillo López, before triumphing in the final, against Estonian Nikita Koršunov, the following day.

Both of his victories were also achieved by unanimous decisions.

Alfie’s success in Spain comes just weeks after he was crowned the junior Welsh 60kg champion for the second year running.

He took up boxing aged eight, represents Llandudno ABC, and trains with his dad, Dan, at his gym, Warrior Fitness North Wales.

Dan, who cheered him on in Spain along with mum, Rachel, said: “The Welsh warrior did it again!

“It seems to becoming the norm now - he’s very relaxed in the ring, and it’s so good to watch him really showing his skills.

“His work ethic is unbelievable, so he deserves it all, really.

“I felt confident watching him in Spain. They (other boxers) didn’t know him or his style, so it seemed to be an easier challenge for him. It was great to watch.

“This was his first big international tournament – the first of many, hopefully!

“It was a really well-organised competition, and Team GB were there scouting, so he’s on the radar now, which is amazing!”

Alfie’s next challenge is the British championships in Motherwell next month, where he will face boxers from Scotland, England and Wales.

He then goes on to “the biggie”, as Dan described it; the European championships in Romania.

After winning gold at the Welsh Box Cup in October 2021, where he was also crowned best schoolboy, Alfie was also champion of the Manchester Box Club last July, before beating Ireland’s number one in December.
