A TALENTED young athlete signed off the season in style with a prestigious national title.

Kosi Iwobi, a Year 7 pupil at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay, turned in a sensational effort to secure gold from the National Primary Schools’ Athletics Championships, which took place in Manchester recently.

The 12-year-old competed in both the discus and shot putt events after qualifying in impressive fashion from the regional heat, joining a number of other successful athletes from Rydal Penrhos at the showcase.

He kept his composure in the face of some stern competition to record a 9.62 metre throw in the shot putt, which ensured he finished the competition with a memorable place at the top of the podium.

This is the latest in a series of outstanding achievements during Kosi’s first year at the school, with the Lower School pupil taking home the Michael S James Junior Boys’ Victor Ludorum Cup after emerging as the standout junior performer from their annual Sports Day festivities.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “Kosi’s commitment throughout the academic year across all areas of Rydal Penrhos life has been nothing short of outstanding, and we were thrilled with his performance on the national stage in securing the shot putt title.

“Hopefully he will use this latest distinction as a stepping stone for further achievements during the remainder of his time at the school, and our dedicated staff team will strive to ensure he continues to develop and reach his ambitious goals.”
