A TEENAGE golf sensation will be aiming for further success as part of the Welsh youth set-up after earning a call-up for a prestigious fixture.

Reuben Bather, a Colwyn Bay native and Year 11 pupil at Rydal Penrhos School, will be part of the national U16 squad that will take on England at Heysham Golf Club in Lancashire later this month.

The 15-year-old sports scholar and junior captain at Maesdu Golf Club in Llandudno has enjoyed a phenomenal amount of success this summer at a host of national and international tournaments, something that has seen him surge up the European rankings to further establish himself as one of the brightest young prospects anywhere on the continent.

He now has a ranking of 14 in the U16 European section, and he is expected to play a huge contributing factor to any success that comes the Welsh way against their English counterparts.

The competition starts in earnest on Saturday, September 22 with singles and foursomes, before the following day sees another set of singles matches to determine the overall winner.

Allen Boyd, director of sport at Rydal Penrhos, said: “Reuben is another fantastic example of what can be achieved by talented individuals as part of our sports scholarship programme, and playing against England in a competitive environment is going to be another very worthwhile experience in terms of his overall development.

“He has worked incredibly hard on and off the course in recent months and this has brought with it some really pleasing results, and there is no telling what Reuben can achieve in the future if he continues to show the same application and enthusiasm to improving his special talent.”
