TWO young sailing stars have been rewarded for another fine season on the water with a national squad selection.

Freddie MacLaverty and Keira Luke, Year 6 pupils at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay, have successfully secured a place in the RYA Cymru Welsh RS Feva National Squad after impressing selectors with a series of fine performances.

The duo, who were recently appointed to Senior Prefect positions in recognition of their overall contribution to Prep School life, have caught the eye at high-profile competitions across the country throughout the summer to further enhance their growing reputation within the sport.

As part of the Welsh National squad system, the young sailors will undergo regular, residential training weekends throughout the winter to prepare for next year’s racing season; which will in turn require the sailors to compete at regular sailing competitions throughout the United Kingdom.

The ‘RS Feva’ is a high performance, double-handed sailing dinghy with a strong and competitive class association, and this is the latest in a series of notable milestones for the pair, who have benefitted enormously from Rydal Penrhos’ thriving sailing provision under the leadership of Max Todd, Dan Rippon and Petrina Blomeley.

Alison Hind, Head of Rydal Penrhos Prep School, said: “Both Freddie and Keira have enjoyed an exceptional amount of success during their young sailing careers, and they are extremely deserving of this national squad selection.

“This will be a fantastic opportunity for them to develop their skills even further over the winter months, and this experience is going to do wonders for their overall development as they look to make a further impact on the national youth scene in the coming months.”
