LLANGEFNI Town manager Chris Roberts was full of praise for his side as they secured one of the biggest upsets in JD Welsh Cup history.

The Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One outfit produced a memorable effort to topple JD Welsh Premier League strugglers Llanelli Town 1-0 on home soil, sparking rapturous scenes with the Cefni faithful who turned out in force for the clash.

Their attention now turns to regaining the initiative in the third tier in their quest for promotion, with Town welcoming Mynydd Llandegai on Wednesday night before travelling to Penrhyndeudraeth on December 22.

Roberts, said: “The lads were outstanding from start to finish yesterday, I asked them to play with no fear and give it everything they’ve got and they certainly did that.

“They stuck to the game plan and executed it well. In truth we could have scored another two or three with Alan Mark Owen, Liam Morris and Craig Roberts all going close and also having the ball hit the back of the net again in the second half but was ruled offside.

“I thought we thoroughly deserved that win and we are all looking forward to another home game in the next round.

“People didn’t expect us to beat Llanelli so we will just enjoy it. I’d like to thank the fans for their support it was incredible yesterday, they really were the 12th man.”

After spurning a number of chances early on, the home side finally gained an advantage when a corner was prodded into the path of Alan Mark Owen, who displayed tremendous determination to steer home from close range to open the scoring.

The same player almost doubled their advantage towards the end of the half, and although they had to ride their luck at times after the break the Cefni rearguard held firm to secure a famous victory over top-flight opposition.
