THREE talented hockey players from the region earned representative honours at the largest indoor event in the country.

Jacob Heaton-Rue, Alex Starling and Tegid Goodman-Jones were part of the North Wales side that competed at the Indooruk18 Hockey tournament, which took place at the Copper Box situated in London’s Olympic Park.

The trio, who all attend Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay, competed against a host of prestigious clubs from the England National League and Conference clubs, and the tournament also featured a team from Australia.

Alex made a huge impression as part of the U14 squad, scoring three times throughout their fixtures as the North Wales side secured two draws and a win during their first taste of competitive action at this level.

There was further cause for celebration with the performance of Tegid in the U16 category, and contributed significantly with goals and strong performances as they grew into the tournament on their way to an eighth placed finish overall after finishing on a high with two triumphs.

Sports scholar and Welsh youth international Jacob competed in the U18 tournament that featured predominantly national level players, and despite losing to eventual finalists Teddington and Canterbury early on, the regional side responded well and notched three successive victories to see the finish in fifth spot.

Jacob ended the competition as top scorer for his side with four strikes, and this is the latest in a series of notable achievements for the three aspiring stars.

Allen Boyd, director of sport at Rydal Penrhos, said: “This is yet another invaluable experience on the big stage for Alex, Jacob and Tegid, who all performed exceptionally well which will give them plenty of confidence for the season ahead.”
