AN ASPIRING track star claimed a first championship success as part of a prestigious American University squad.

Matty Harding, who attended Rydal Penrhos and Eirias High School in Colwyn Bay, joined Virginia Tech University on a prestigious scholarship last summer and has been making great strides at one of the top sporting establishments anywhere in the world.

This development was further evident at the Hokies’ Invitational Championships earlier this month, where Matt turned in an outstanding effort in the 1,000 metres to cross the line in first spot after securing a time of 2:25.41.

The 20-year-old was one many significant additions to the Virginia Tech squad during the summer in what the US Media called “one of the best-recruiting classes in the Hokies’ history”.

He arrived at Blacksburg following a two-year stint at UNC Asheville, where he qualified for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships as a freshman.

He also won the 800 meters three times while competing in the Big South Conference Championships for the Bulldogs.

Allen Boyd, director of sport at Rydal Penrhos, said: “Matty’s incredible progress in the United States has been fantastic to see, and everyone at Rydal Penrhos is absolutely thrilled with his ongoing success.

“We are very proud to have played a small part in his development, and he is just one of a large number of former pupils who are making a sporting impact across the country and beyond.”
