AN aspiring Track and Field star has been rewarded for his exceptional start to the season with a high-profile squad selection.

Jonathan Osbourne, a Year 8 pupil at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay, received a call-up to the North West Wales set-up for the upcoming Sportshall Welsh Athletics Finals, which will take place in Cwmbran later this month.

The Academic and Sports Scholar, who also represents Colwyn Bay Athletics Club, is the only representative from a school in the Conwy region selected to the squad, and he will be competing in the U13 and U15 categories in the hope of securing further success on the national stage.

It has been a memorable few months for the 12-year-old, who turned in another outstanding display at the recent Manchester and North Wales Championships at the Etihad Sports City complex earlier this month, where he secured a personal best in the 60-metre sprint, going under nine seconds for the first time in his fledgling career.

This was another podium placing in the long jump, where Jonathan finished third and missed out on yet another personal best by just four centimetres, and he smashed his PB on two occasions in the high jump to further enhance his reputation as one of the brightest young prospects anywhere in the area.

Allen Boyd, director of sport at Rydal Penrhos, said: β€œTo receive a selection to the North West Wales squad is a testament to how hard Jonathan is working to develop his excellent athletic ability on a daily basis, and the fact he is surpassing his PBs at almost every competition is further proof of the talent he has.”
