SOME of the region’s most talented rugby 7s stars will descend on a Colwyn Bay for a special tournament next weekend.

Rydal Penrhos School will be hosting its annual U16 Sevens tournament on Saturday, March 12, which will run from 9am until 4pm.

Teams will be put into four groups, and following the opening games, each team will be divided into Cup, Plate, Bowl, Trophy and Shield depending on their placings in each pool.

Last year’s competition was cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions, with the second running of the event in 2017 seeing Welsh Rugby Union president Dennis Gethin on hand to view the action and dish out the trophies following what was a hotly contested day of action.

The draw for the event will be made next week, with a large number of school sides and local clubs awaiting their fate as preparations gather pace.

Allen Boyd, director of sport at Rydal Penrhos, said: “Our U16 Rugby 7s competition is always something that offers up plenty of excitement for those taking part, and this year’s entries are sure to provide some high-quality throughout.

“It is always a great experience for our U16 squad, who continue to benefit from the expert coaching they receive here at Rydal Penrhos, in addition improving their physical attributes as part of our specialist strength and conditioning programme.

“Hopefully this will bring with it some impressive results and we look forward to welcoming everyone to New Field for the event.”
