COLWYN Bay manager Craig Hogg hailed the selfless contribution of striker Ash Woods following their 2-0 win at Kidsgrove Athletic.

The Seagulls turned in another polished display on their travels to secure their third successive victory, and they now occupy ninth spot in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One West standings ahead of their next outing at playoff rivals Leek Town on Tuesday, April 2.

Hogg, said: “It was a really important result for us and as games of football go it was a very good example of how the game should be played.

“Kidsgrove are an excellent team and played some superb football, especially in the opening 25 minutes, putting us under sustained pressure with some great build up play.

“But the way we coped with that in the first half was very good indeed and I thought we were excellent in how we moved the ball and causing our opponents problems.

“Lass Mendes put in a man of the match display and he was awesome yet again, but I’m delighted for our striker Ash Woods in particular.

“His performances often go under the radar and he often doesn’t get the praise he deserves - he was simply outstanding in leading the line up top.

“He got kicked, elbowed and roughed up for 90% of the game, but took it in his stride and scored two great goals - although he will probably feel he should have scored two more as well!

“We have a huge fixture period coming up in April with seven games in four weeks.

“It will be crucial for us to try and maintain this level of performance with a view to seeing how high we can finish.”

After Mendes and skipper Tom McCready missed chances early on, the away side got the crucial breakthrough in first half stoppage time when Woods steered home a superb delivery from Craig Pritchard.

Things got even better for the visitors after the break when Woods despatched his second of the afternoon following outstanding work from Mendes on 58 minutes, and Hogg’s side saw out the remainder of the game in comfortable fashion to give their top six hopes a huge boost.
