ASPIRING Rugby 7s stars at a Colwyn Bay school continued their excellent campaign with an impressive tournament triumph.

Rydal Penrhos School's U13A squad travelled to Stonyhurst College for their annual Rugby 7s Festival on Wednesday, March 20, which saw the group test their skills against some strong opposition from across Cheshire and the North West.

Things did not begin well for the squad thanks to a 5-0 loss to Lancaster Royal Grammar School, but they bounced back well to secure a 2-2 draw with Sedburgh thanks in no small part to a stunning solo try from Gabriel Speakman.

A 4-3 loss against St Ambrose saw the Rydal Penrhos contingent put in the Bowl category of the knockout stages, and they turned on the style to advance to the next round with a 5-0 triumph over Terra Nova School, with Year 8 pupil George Watkins crossing the white wash on two occasions.

Their Bowl final clash against Packwood Haugh proved to be a very physical affair, but the young players dug deep to take home the crown and round off the competition in style.

Allen Boyd, director of sport at Rydal Penrhos, said: “A massive congratulations to all the players who put 100 per cent effort into every match and played some every good rugby.

“Max Cowen-Wright’s tireless work in defence and attack and Gabriel Speakman’s great attacking play throughout the day were notable highlights, and it was a hugely encouraging performance against strong opposition from a group that are gelling extremely well together and are really finding their feet within the 7s discipline.”
