HOLYHEAD HOTSPUR 1

RUTHIN TOWN 2

IT was a case of fourth time lucky for Ruthin Town over the weekend.

Chris Williams' side had lost their three previous meetings with Holyhead Hotspur this season, but it all came right in Saturday's clash on Anglesey.

Ruthin saw off Hotspur 2-1 in their final game of the campaign, securing a magnificent seventh placed finish in the Huws Gray Alliance for the young squad.

Seven days earlier, Holyhead had gathered the three points during their visit to Memorial Park Fields, but Ruthin began the return contest on the front foot.

They took the lead after just three minutes.

Gwion Owen picked the ball up on the halfway line, turned his marker and played a brilliant through ball to top scorer Llyr Morris, who finished well beyond the keeper in a one-on-one situation.

Ruthin were playing well on the tricky surface and they were seeing all of the ball in the early stages.

However, on nine minutes, Holyhead equalised.

Ruthin failed to clear a free kick and Holyhead midfielder Tomos Clarke was there at the far post to poke the ball over the line.

Clarke is proving to be a real thorn in Ruthin's side and this made it four goals for him in just two games versus Town.

Ruthin had a gilt-edged chance to regain the lead in the 20th minute.

Rhys Rowlands' through ball set Gwydion Ifan free and he ran in on goal, but just as he was going to shoot, the ball bobbled and he struck the chance high over the bar.

Almost immediately, Gwion Owen forced a good save from Holyhead keeper Dan Williams after good work between him and Morris to set him free inside of box.

Ruthin were presented with a glorious opportunity to regain the lead eight minutes shy of the break.

Llyr Morris was sent free again and as he was wriggling himself free to shoot, he was brought down in the area for a penalty to be awarded.

Morris picked himself up to coolly score from the spot and make it 2-1.

This took his tally for the season up to 20 goals.

Town came out for the second half looking for their third goal to put the game to bed.

Full back Tom Roberts, winger Tom Williams and Rhys Rowlands all had shots from edge of the box, but they couldn’t work keeper Williams.

Tom Williams did well down the left and from his cross, Morris went so close to a hat-trick when hit the post with a header.

The next player to strike the woodwork was Matty Evans, whose shot from 16 yards beat the keeper, but it rattled the crossbar.

In the last quarter-of-an-hour of the game, Holyhead put a lot of crosses into the box, but centre halves Tom Dyer and Kevin Evans, plus keeper Ryan Goldston, withstood everything as Ruthin gained the three points to finish off their season on a high.
