CONWY claimed derby bragging rights to get their North Wales Cricket League Division One season off to a flyer with a six-wicket home win over Llanrwst.

The visitors got off to a positive start in the middle until skipper Aron Hughes was ousted by Graham Meredith on 22, and Evan Williams also got in on the act early on with the prized scalp of Jack Hughes for a duck.

Recent returnee from Colwyn Bay Shaun Davies then took over proceedings with the quick-fire wickets of Alwyn Williams (0), Aled Jones (4), Alex Evans (5) and Lee Thomas, with the all-rounder also disposing of opener Scott Thomas on 48 on his way to figures of 5-25 from a nine-over spell.

Joseph Guy’s knock of 23 gave the Rwsters’ score a sense of respectability as they set a modest target of 131 all out from 35 overs.

Things did not begin well for the home side as Thomas clean bowled their talented skipper Rajjenu Britto after he failed to contribute a single run, but the Davies brothers of Shaun and Danny took over proceedings from then on to ensure they reached their required total with minimal fuss.

The tandem were in mid-season form to give the hosts a convincing victory without losing another wicket, with Danny Davies excelling with the bat after a standout knock that saw him end the innings unbeaten on 76.

He was ably assisted at the other end by Shaun Davies, who contributed 42 not out as Conwy got their campaign off to the best possible start.

Britto’s men will travel to Gwersyllt Park on Saturday, with Llanrwst also on the road at Mold.
