A HALF century from Aron Hughes was not enough to prevent Llanrwst from falling to a 49-run loss at Carmel and District.

The Rwsters’ were set a target of 172-5 from 50 overs by their North Wales Cricket League Division One rivals, with Scott Thomas’ impressive spell seeing him take the wickets of Dafydd Bailey (36), Daniel Owens (4), and Jack Whitehouse (18) on his way to figures of 3-35.

Alwyn Williams was another visiting bowler that emerged from the contest with an enormous amount of credit, with the in-form player ousting Gwion Dafydd (11) and top scorer Ben Sim (48) to end the day with two wickets for the loss of 65 runs.

Double-figure scores from Thomas (17) and Nathan Jones (27) got the run chase off to a moderately positive start, but their predicament became more precarious when Jack Hughes (1), Huw Williams (5) and Lee Thomas (9) were all despatched cheaply soon after.

The one firm presence in the middle was Hughes, who demonstrated his qualities to secure a 50 knock, but this effort proved to be for nothing as the away side mustered 123 in reply.

Derek Johnson’s blistering spell saw him take four wickets for just 11 runs from a seven-over spell that proved to be the difference, and Llanrwst will look to get back on track this Saturday when they welcome Hawarden Park.
