RHYL suffered their second straight weekend without a fixture after their game at Corwen fell victim to the weather.

Heavy rain throughout the region over the last fortnight has left some of the War Memorial Ground surface underwater leaving the surface unplayable.

Eddie Maurice-Jones’ side now have a schooled weekend off before preparing to host Gresford Athletic on March 7.

Meanwhile, the club have paid tribute to lifelong supporter Mike Griffiths following his recent death.

The popular figure was a familiar face at the Educate Group Stadium for a considerable period of time and the club plans to honour Mr Griffiths prior to their next home fixture.

A club spokesman, said: “Rhyl Football Club are saddened to hear the news of the death of Mike Griffiths.

“Mike had been a loyal supporter over the last 50 years of the Lilywhites and had been a stalwart supporter following his team home and away on many adventures.

“Supporters have been paying tribute to the memories of Mike on social media recounting memories of the past with Mike being described as a Lilywhite through and through and someone who was a true loyal supporter.

“The club will honour the memory of Mike at the next home game against Gresford Athletic when a tribute will be observed prior to the kick-off the game.”

Academy graduate Mason Blackwell-Jones earned international recognition last week thanks to his involvement with the Welsh Colleges squad.

The teenager has been part of the first team squad this season, scoring his first senior goal in their recent success over Ruthin Town.

He has been part of the national set-up that travelled to Italy for the Caput Mundi tournament, which is organised by the Italian Football Federation in partnership with their Lazio regional committee.

Glyn Roberts, coach for Rhyl under 19’s, said: “Mason has had some great opportunities with the first team recently, alongside others from the under 19’s squad and he has responded well to the challenges.

“The chance to play in this tournament in Italy was a fantastic opportunity for Mason and one that created memories to treasure.”
