A BRACE from Shaun Cavanagh gave Porthmadog a crucial 2-0 home victory over Buckley Town.

The JD Cymru North strugglers picked up a vital three points that improves their chances of avoiding the drop, and they now sit four point behind Llangefni Town with two games in hand.

Port have another big chance to pick up points this Saturday when they welcome basement dwellers Llanfair United to Y Traeth.

Manager Craig Papirnyk, said: “Massive thanks to the volunteers who got the game on, some down the ground before 8pm. Unbelievable effort.

“I am buzzing we got the three points for their efforts and it was also great to see such amazing support again. It wasn’t pretty, conditions didn’t help but we got the job done.”

Port’s last competitive league fixture saw them claim a creditable draw at champions elect Prestatyn Town, and they started well in this one without taking any of the opportunities that came their way in the first period.

Things took a turn in their favour after the break, with Cavanagh extending his fine recent form in front of goal with a fine header on 51 minutes after good work from Jay Gibbs and Jamie McDaid in the build-up.

This was swiftly followed by another for the hosts on 58 minutes, and once again it was Cavanagh who was the difference between the two sides after latching on to an Iwan Lewis through ball before delivering an expert chip over the keeper and into the net.

Gibbs and substitute Rhys Hughes almost put the result beyond all doubt midway through the half, and despite weathering some heavy pressure late on Port saw out the game comfortably to secure the points.
