A TEENAGE golfer has received a national call-up for a prestigious upcoming tournament.

Charley Simpson, a Year 10 pupil at the Rydal Penrhos in Colwyn Bay, will be part of the Welsh squad that competes in the Quadrangular U16 Championships in April.

The two-time Junior Captain at Rhos on Sea Golf Club is part of a six-strong line-up that will test their skills against Ireland, Scotland and Holland with a view to securing the crown.

The three-day competition is taking place at Donabate Golf Club in Ireland and following a practice session, Charley will be involved in double and single match play rounds over two days when competitive action gets underway.

This is the first time Charley has competed at this level, and he is the youngest member of the Wales Golf Aspire squad.

He has been training with the development scheme throughout the winter at various locations across the country in preparation for the 2020 campaign.

Charley has played a significant role in Rydal Penrhos Golf Academy’s exceptional string of achievements, with the school clinching the ISGA Northern Match Play Championship for the second consecutive year, booking their place in the national finals at Formby Hall.

Sally Ann Harding, senior school head at Rydal Penrhos, said: “Charley’s Welsh squad is an absolutely incredible achievement and one that he has worked tremendously hard to achieve.

“He is a well-rounded young man who seems to thrive on the big stage, and everyone at Rydal Penrhos wishes him and Wales the very best of luck at the Quadrangular Championships.”
