CPD Y Rhyl 1879 made the perfect choice for their first-ever club captain in Reece Fairhurst.

The newly-formed club are looking to make big strides in the NWCFA Tier 4 (East) Premier Division when competitive action is finally able to resume following the coronavirus pandemic, and the defender will be tasked with leading a talented group of players to promotion at the first possible opportunity.

Fairhurst is a hometown boy that has a wealth of experience in the domestic game. He was part of the Prestatyn Town side that won the Huws Gray Alliance title, but he was unable to make a significant impression in the JD Cymru Premier thanks to some injury problems.

He was part of the now wound-up Rhyl FC squad over the last two seasons, and Fairhurst deserves a tremendous amount of credit for sticking around with the new club when there were opportunities to play at a higher standard.

There is little doubt that Fairhurst is one of the region’s best defenders when at the top of his game. His positional sense is excellent and the player’s ability on the ball is another standout feature to his game that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Gareth Thomas’ side will have a big bullseye on their backs in their inaugural campaign. Fairhurst has experience of this during his time at Prestatyn and this will stand the squad in good stead ahead of an expected title challenge.

It would have been easy for Fairhurst to follow in the footsteps of every other ex-Lilywhite and take their chances elsewhere. There was reported interest from the likes of Denbigh Town, but having a familiar face who understands fully what the club means to the town is another massive boost for those who haven’t turned out at Belle Vue previously.

Hopefully for the player and the club, Fairhurst’s injury problems are behind him and he can make a telling contribution next season. He now has the added incentive of being skipper and this might even dee the player’s game reach new heights.

It is a time to look forward, not back, regarding the plight of Rhyl’s footballing future after a turbulent year that was a rollercoaster ride for all involved. And it is clear that Fairhurst is going to play a leading role in whatever success comes their way.
