PENMAENMAWR Phoenix manager Martyn Jones lent his support to the ‘one game’ against every league team when it is safe to begin the season.

The NWCFA Tier 4 (West) Premier Division side were looking to stake a promotion claim before concerns increased surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, meaning no football below the JD Cymru Premier has taken place this term.

The local and fire-break lockdowns have thrown a further spanner in the works, leaving Jones to wonder if there will even be any competitive action to speak of at all.

He said: ““As a squad we are doing fine, like most teams we have a wats app group which is going off most days to keep in touch. I’ve spoken to all of the lads individually at some point as well for various things. It was a bit frustrating getting a friendly in the diary then having to cancel due to the fire-break but it is what it is, everyone’s in the same boat.

“As time moves on and we enter November it’s only natural to wonder if we will have a season at all this year. I hope we can, how that will look is anybody’s guess.”

Jones added that after conversing with other managers from the region, he is supportive of a system where teams play each other once in a random home draw setting, but highlighted the importance of safety before the Welsh Government and Football Association of Wales finalise plans for a potential return.

“I spoke to a couple of other managers locally last week and one suggestion could be to just play everyone once instead of twice and it’s pulled out of a hat which ground it’s at. I’d be in favour of that if it meant the season could go ahead,” added Jones.

“I think during the summer months most can deal without football, there is a lot of other things to do, it’s a different story through the winter months. I think that’s when it will affect people the most.

“The impact of having no season at all for 2020/21 could be damaging for the game locally but it’s important to remember that the safety of everyone must take first priority. I hope we can get to a stage where it’s safe for us to start and hopefully make something of it.”
