NEIL Gibson’s first game as Flint Town United boss was called off at the last minute due to COVID-19 concerns.

The former Prestatyn Town manager was due to take charge of the Silkmen for their trip to Penybont on Saturday, but plans to travel were brought to an abrupt halt after three United players tested positive for coronavirus.

Several other squad members displayed COVID-19 symptoms, meaning their crunch home game against Cefn Druids on Tuesday night is also in significant doubt.

A Flint Town United spokesman, said: “We can confirm that three players have tested positive and several others are displaying symptoms and will be arranging tests today (Saturday).

“Depending upon test results this may mean Tuesday's planned home game with Cefn Druids is also in doubt. Further updates will be given when more information is available.

“As a club, we have been strictly adhering to COVID-19 protocols and are extremely disappointed at this turn of events, but the safety of our players and staff is paramount and we have had no choice but to take this action, which unfortunately has led to the postponement.”

This is the latest JD Cymru Premier contest to be put back due to the increasing risks surrounding coronavirus, with first minister Mark Drakeford growing increasingly concerned about the spike in cases that could result in further lockdown measures over the Christmas period.

Gibson agreed to take over from Niall McGuinness on Monday after the former Rhyl FC manager was removed from his position after a disappointing start to the campaign.
