COLWYN Bay Cricket Club are set to miss out on hosting Glamorgan matches this season, after the county confirmed its final venues for the domestic season.

Glamorgan’s LV= County Championship matches against Leicestershire and Durham will take place at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff and Neath Cricket Club.

They said they are ‘unable’ to host a fixture in North Wales this season, and said a joint decision had been made with Colwyn Bay Cricket Club to not host a game at their ground.

Glamorgan’s head of operations, Dan Cherry, said: “We’re pleased to finalise the 2023 fixture list, which will see red-ball cricket played in Cardiff in July.

“It’s also exciting to be able to play in Neath again after a successful return to the venue last season. Both matches were very well attended and we were treated to some fantastic cricket.

“Unfortunately, we are still unable to host a fixture in North Wales this season.

“There are still significant logistical and financial challenges to playing at Colwyn Bay Cricket Club, and further operational issues caused by a fire that broke out last year that damaged buildings at the venue.

“As a result, it has been agreed by both Glamorgan and Colwyn Bay Cricket Club that first-class cricket would not be able to be held at the ground this year.

“We remain committed to playing out-ground cricket across Wales and are currently discussing with our partners and stakeholders in North Wales to investigate all of our options as we begin planning a return in 2024.”

However, Colwyn Bay said they were ‘surprised’ to have read the statement, saying it was solely the decision of Glamorgan not to play in North Wales.

Despite the arson attack on the pavilion last year making hosting ‘challenging’, the club said they would be prepared to host Glamorgan should the county wish.

A Colwyn Bay Cricket Club spokesperson said: “We were surprised to read the statement on Glamorgan's official website, however our ground was available to them should they have wished to come.

“It was solely Glamorgan's difficulties that made them decide not to come to North Wales.

“It would have been challenging for Colwyn Bay Cricket Club, given the loss from the arson attack of the tea pavilion, but not insurmountable.”

Conwy County Borough Council have said are working on bringing key events back to the area.

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Aaron Wynne said “Conwy County Borough Council are continuing to work with organisers to see the return of key events to the area following the pandemic.

"Sadly we will not be able to welcome the Glamorgan Cricket Festival to North Wales in 2023 but we’re working together to bring it back to the area in 2024."
