A BULL reared by a Conwy farmer has fetched £189,000 at an auction for livestock.

Gerwyn Jones, of Graig Goch Farm, Nebo, Llanrwst, Conwy saw popularity for the bull Graiggoch Rambo at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s May bull sale in Carlisle, Cumbria.

The bull was sold for 180,000gns, equal to £189,000, which is the highest price ever paid for a Limousin bull, with the proceeds set to be reinvested in breeding stock despite the temptation to spend that so many would feel.

Rambo was the farmer’s first pedigree Limousin and his first trip to Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

Following the sale, Gerwyn Jones said: “The events of the weekend are only just sinking in.

“After working with experienced breeders for a long time, I knew Rambo was something special, which was confirmed by the interest and offers received at home prior to the sale.

“Due to the attention he was attracting, I was concerned it may deter under bidders, thankfully this was not the case.

“I am delighted that my first pedigree registered Limousin has sold so amazingly well.”

Prior to the sale, Rambo was described by judge Patrick Greaney of the Whiskey Limousin herd as the best bull he had ever seen: “I slept well the night before the judging, but I didn’t sleep well once I had seen him!

“I knew an incredible sale would be coming”

The sale has set a new world record price for a Limousin bull, smashing the previous record – Trueman Jagger sold for 140,000gns in 2015.

On average, bulls fetch between £8,000-11,000, depending on their age.

Rambo, a November 2020-born bull, is an Ampertaine Elgin son out of Sarkley Glorianne, which attracted buyers due to coming from an “exceptional” breeding line, with width, depth of muscle and breed retention.

The bull was purchased in a two-way syndicate by Messrs Jenkinson of the Whinfellpark herd, Penrith and Boden and Davies Ltd of the Sportsmans herd, Stockport, Cheshire.

A spokesperson for the buyers said: “Possibly the best bull we have ever seen offered for sale at Carlisle.

“Rambo will be going straight to stud to have semen taken.”

Graiggoch Rambo was declared the overall champion of the meeting, with Pat Greaney adding: “Rambo is the best bull I have ever seen.”
