A MAN in Abergele has been welcoming unlikely guests into his garden – a family of deer.

Craig Hughes, who runs Craig Hughes Upholstery in Colwyn Bay, said deer enter his garden on a “regular basis” at his and his family’s home on the outskirts of Abergele.

Their visits vary from every few months to a daily occurrence, and has been going on for years.

In the last week they were visited by a mother and baby, and shortly before that a larger herd.

“The deer come into our garden on a regular basis, but sometimes we might not see them for months and other times can see them almost every day,” Craig told the Pioneer.

“Invariably we leave our gate open so they just wander in, but even when the gate is shut they can jump over it.”

Craig, who is the main restorer on the Discovery Channel's Quest TV Salvage Hunters and a main presenter on Salvage Hunters The Restorers, also came up with an ingenious idea that benefits both the deer and their hosts.

With deer enjoying the delights that could be found in his garden, Craig’s garden was at times at the mercy of his guests.

He continued: “Many years ago we got fed up with them eating the plants in the garden so we did some research to see what they won’t eat.

“So what we did then was pull out the ones they didn’t like and leave them on the drive.

“We have a variety of wildlife and welcome all of them including the deer!”
