FOUR “dangerous” mini-roundabouts on a busy road are set to be removed.

Conwy Council said resurfacing work would be carried out on St Asaph Avenue in Kinmel Bay between Monday, January 15 and Friday, February 2, as long as weather permits.

The work, being carried out in the evening and overnight, is set to cause disruption while taking place.

As part of the work, four mini-roundabouts will be removed and replaced with “give way” road markings.

The work means parking will be restricted whilst the work is carried out and part of the stretch will be closed between 6pm and 2am.

The four roundabouts being removed are at Chester Avenue, Owain Glyndwr, Clwyd Park, and Denbigh Circle.

The work will be done in seven stages by removing the existing surface, replacing ironwork, manholes, and drainage gullies, cleaning the surface with a mechanical sweeper, and laying a bond coating to make sure the new surface sticks.

The new surface will then be laid, rolled, and the new road markings will be repainted.

Kinmel Bay councillor Nigel Smith said he was glad the roundabouts, put in place more than a decade ago, were being replaced with junctions.

“The roundabouts give a false sense of security to those vehicles exiting the side roads,” he said.

“Vehicles travelling north to south don’t necessarily give way, and as such they cause traffic problems for the residents who use that road regularly.”

He added: “When there is road resurfacing works taking place, there is always disruption to residents and people that transit along those routes.

“I believe the road has up to 8,000 vehicles a day.

“The work is being done in the evening.

“They did the southern part of the road some years ago.

“We’ve got to make it as painless as possible so it hinders the least amount of people.

“Obviously, the evening time is the quiet period.

“It is a busy route. A lot of vehicles are travelling into Rhyl and people travelling into Pensarn and Belgrano areas, so it is a busy road.

“But unfortunately, the road surface doesn’t last forever and occasionally needs replacing.

“It’ll be painful when it is being done, but it will soon be forgotten.”

A council spokesperson said: “We are resurfacing St Asaph Avenue, from Cader Avenue to Tir Llwyd Enterprise Park roundabout.

“As part of this work, we are removing the mini roundabouts and adding Give Way road markings to the side road junctions.

“Our contractors will be working in the evening and at night, between 6pm and 2am, to minimise traffic disruption.

“This section of St Asaph Avenue will be closed at these times.

“Our contractors will make every effort to carry out the noisier work earlier in the night.

“Please speak to the traffic management contractor on site to discuss if and when you can get vehicle access.

“There will be access for pedestrians at all times.”
