TRAVELLERS who set up camp at the base of Conwy Castle walls near to a school have moved on.
The travelling community left Morfa Bach car park on the eve of Monday, May 5. One person said they saw a "load of vans and caravans in a convoy" heading over the bridge towards Llandudno Junction.
Rubbish has been left on the site, including "human excrement" and nappies.
Over the Bank Holiday weekend, travellers had pitched up on the the field on Llanrwst Road, which acts as an overflow car park to Morfa Bach car park, which is the car park off Llanrwst Road, near to Ysgol Porth Y Felin.
Cllr Sian Grady, Conwy town and county councillor, said: "I’m glad to say the travelling community finally moved on last night."
She went on to praise residents for their "patience and understanding".
Prior to the community moving on, a resident informed the Pioneer that when she approached the travellers, "nobody was rude or abusive".
She said: "The travellers have set up camp at the base of the castle walls, next to Porth y Felin school. There are several large caravans, vans, chippers.
"I approached them [over the weekend] to ask what their plans were as they were using a public car park. They said they were all on contract work to manage trees and that they would be there for sometime. I also approached a group of children and asked them where they were from - they said 'we live here now'.
"Nobody was rude or abusive.
"My concern was that I saw toilet paper and excrement on the steps. I can’t of course be sure it was them, but there is a lot of litter being accumulated and the large gas cylinders are a concern together with large fires which I do think, in fairness, they are using a fire pit.
"I understand they are travellers and need places to pitch up but they are at the site of a world heritage location in an overflow carpark.
"I can imagine this will cause significant issues in the town, especially on a bank holiday weekend."
The resident informed the council of their concerns to do with litter and human waste.
The Pioneer has approached Conwy County Borough Council for comment.
