MORE THAN 1,100 fans saw Colwyn Bay crowned JD Cymru North champions and celebrate a memorable season in the club’s history.

The Seagulls had already secured the title on Good Friday and there was great anticipation ahead of the game against Llandudno Town at the 4 Crosses Construction Arena.

Llandudno gave the Bay players a guard of honour as they entered the field, and it was the visitors, guaranteed a third place finish, who started the better of the two sides with Mason Blackwell-Jones going close before they took the lead.

Former Bay player Julian Williams’ deflected shot saw Llandudno go in front after 20 minutes to silence the majority of the crowd.

Bay did settle into the game and Tommy Creamer and Sam Downey both fired over the crossbar.

Steve Evans’ side had to wait until three minutes before half-time to level.

Creamer acrobatically helped on Matty Hill’s cross and Craig Lindfield netted from close range.

Both sides had chances in the second half but the game petered out and a draw was a fair result, the second time this season the teams could not be separated.

While the game will not go down as the most memorable at Llanelian Road, the celebrations that followed certainly will.

When captain Tom McCready received the Cymru North trophy from Football Association of Wales president Steve Williams, it sparked joyous celebrations and players, staff and supporters.

“One thing I said when I came in - let’s give our fans something to cheer about,” Bay manager Steve Evans said.

“They’ve been first class all season.

“I truly believe that we fully deserve to be champions

“To go all season and just lose one game in the league says a huge amount about this group of players.

“They’ve given me everything.”

It has been a remarkable season for the Bay, with 25 successive league wins after the opening game 2-2 draw against Llandudno last July.

That winning run was ended by Holywell Town last month but back-to-back wins against Penrhyncoch and Holywell’s loss to Llamdudno saw Bay secure the title and promotion to the Cymru Premier before last Saturday’s game against Llandudno.

The Bay will be aiming for more silverware this Saturday, when they face Porthmadog in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup northern final at Bala Town.
